Olds and Area Entrepreneur Night

I couldn’t be more excited to put together this Olds and Area Entrepreneur Night! I think every business owner knows the benefits of being able to talk to liked minded individuals who are passionate about business and want to share new ideas and receive some feedback as well.

There are lots of different organizations out there that offer master mind groups, meetings and gatherings which is where this idea came from. However I haven’t noticed many options when it comes to local business meet up groups in and around the Olds area.

Regardless, why not create one?! Why not get together and share some business stories with those that truly understand the challenges that comes with running your own business.

One of the biggest challenges that comes with running a business is being able to find solutions. So this idea came up and I’ve decided to run with it.

Who Am I?

If you’re not sure who I am, I’d like to offer some details in you’re wondering who is putting this event together. I’ll be brief and offer a link with more details. After traveling the world as a professional baseball player, stopping in 3 continents and 4 countries and more states and provinces than I can count I decided to jump into the entrepreneurial world.

I started out running fitness classes and personal training, then hosted a 30 min radio show which is now Syndicated Across Canada on several stations called Exploring Mind and Body, I wrote a best selling book called Detoxify Yourself featured on Global News Calgary, and have designed and product our own plant based protein supplement called Complete Truth Protein.

I’ve spoke at several events offering social media advice, I’ve consulted with small businesses to help them grow and I’ve put together video production work for other businesses all in the hopes of helping them reach not just a larger but target audience.

One of my passions is business, talking business, marketing, seeing what works and what doesn’t. So what better way to follow a passion of mine than to put together an event link this. If you want more details as to who I am and what I do you can find that HERE.

Basic Structure

Let’s get into the event and what the basic structure will look like. Let’s take 5 individuals for example.  They’ll all sit at a table and have the chance to get to know one another. Then each individual will share with the group their biggest concern that they can use some help with. This will take 5 minutes. Next the group will take 15 minutes to offer feedback, suggestions and advice in an open conversation. The goal is finding solutions for the specific problem.

You don’t have to be an expert and you don’t have to be in business for 20 years to offer advice. Remember this is just a conversation; very casual, very open and free flowing conversation. No one is right or wrong, you simply talk through the issues brought up. Sometimes even saying issues out loud makes a big difference (which means sometimes you don’t even have to say anything to help).

The beauty of this is, we all have different experiences and backgrounds; we all run different businesses, have different customers and have a different perspective on a given situation. Which is why a group like this is so beneficial. You have the opportunity to learn from others, hear what they would do if they went through something similar or listen to what someone else would do if they were in your shoes.

To respect everyone’s time someone will be keeping track of the 5 minute and 15 minute intervals so everyone has a chance to have their concerns addressed. Someone will be there telling you when it’s time to change to the next person.

We do ask, even if you’re in mid conversation that once the timer goes, you stop, maybe write down a note so you remember what you were going to say, and move on so we don’t go over the allotted time for everyone.

Who is this for?

This group is for anyone that’s interested in talking business, making connections, meeting new people and sharing and hearing ideas.

Maybe you don’t have a business yet but are thinking about starting one. Couldn’t you learn from seasoned individuals who have been running a business for years? And what if all you know is your business, what a great way to network with other businesses and grow together, find out what other people are doing, what’s working and what isn’t.

What if you have a business that doesn’t make money? No problem at all, this is perfect for you. Everyone started at the same place, every business owner started out with an idea; they started out trying to figure out how to make money, and we all struggled in different ways. What better way than to learn than from 5 other people sharing how they took the next step?

And what if you’ve run a business for 20 years? Well in this case there’s a good chance there are new and upcoming trends that fresh, inspired entrepreneurs are doing that you can learn from. How to keep up with new social media, how to manage it all, and how to stay connected are all great reasons to be part of a group like this.

What if you don’t have anything to offer?

Most of us don’t give ourselves enough credit. First of all, you don’t have to be an expert to be here. In fact, in this casual environment we’re looking for real people that can share their struggles and offer a bit of advice as well. But by no means are you expected to solve anyone’s problems. We’re all coming together to offer suggestions that may work. You never know until you try and without different ideas, many of us stay stuck in the same place.

What the Night Looks Like

30 mins to meet and greet

Get to know one another; given that we live in a small town there’s a good chance you’ll know a lot of the people attending. And who knows, you may even find some people that you’ve been wanting to meet but haven’t had the chance.

This is espeically important for introverts or those that shy away from events like this. Making connections is vital to run a successful business. So even if the thought of ‘networking’ raises your anxiety level, step outside your comfort zone and invest in your business.

And if you’re not the type of person to introduce yourself, l’ll be there to introduce you and everyone else that will be there.

I see this as being a smaller, intimate group with open conversation, a warm and supportive environment with people coming together to help one another, not to put each other down or to compete with one another. So if you’re on the same page as this, you’ll be a perfect fit!

After the initial meet and green I’ll be doing a 20 min presentation sharing some of my top business tips which will include a brief Q & A.

Break Up into Groups

You don’t have to worry about finding a group of people, you don’t have to worry about feeling left out like being the last one picked at recess for dodgeball or kickball. We’ll have the group set up for you before you arrive. Which is why it’s important for you to be there if you commit. More on that below.

Investment:

I don’t feel like I should have to justify a cost but for those that might be wondering why there’s a price?

Because everyone’s time is worth something especially when you’re running a business. It takes time and effort to organize these events. Unfortunately few people value free events. They plan to go but don’t show up because there’s no incentive like paying in advance.

Show up to this event like you expect your customers to show up when they plan to meet you. Put yourself first, believe you and your business deserve a night like this, because you do.

$25 is a minimal fee, in fact most similar groups charge hundreds to get together in a way like this. I also feel if you’re not willing to invest $25 in your own business, how can we expect our customers to invest in our products and services?

Again there is limited space at our venue, so once we’re full, we’re full. We’ll cut off registration and start planning for those that sign up first!

Cancelations 

Unfortunately if you cancel there won’t be a refund for the reasons listed above. There is limited space available and from the feedback I received when asking if people think this is a good idea, I expect the venue to fill up quickly.

So if you register and we put you in a group, if you don’t make it, not only are you missing out but so are those other people that expect you to be there to help support them as well.
