There are tons of health benefits associated with Activated Charcoal that we’re going to discuss here today and a number of different ways to use it. Although some people are only just starting to hear about it, activated charcoal isn’t exactly a new thing. In fact, it’s been around for thousands of years.
“The first documented use of activated charcoal goes as far back as 3750 B.C., when it was first used by the Egyptians for smelting ores to create bronze. By 1500 B.C. the Egyptians were also using it for intestinal ailments, absorbing unpleasant odors, and for writing on papyrus.”
Now that we know this isn’t a new thing, and civilizations have been using it long before you and I were ever here. Let’s talk about some of the health benefits. Why would you actually use this product?

People are always going to ask; are there any risks associated with using activated charcoal? In my research, I couldn’t find any other than it might turn your stool black. They caution you not to take it too close to medications because they might lose their effectiveness, or too close to food so you don’t lose any nutritional value. Your health is important to me, so as always, check with your doctor before starting anything new and if you notice unusual symptoms discontinue use. Dorothy and I recognize the benefits of activated charcoal, so we take it every day.
We teach a Lifestyle Detox, not a quick fast or weekend cleanse because we know that no matter how proactive you are in eliminating toxins from your environment, some toxins like heavy metals are unavoidable. So, that is where a supplement like activated charcoal comes in. Its main purpose is to help your body detox from those toxins that you can’t control or are unavoidable, like the toxins that are found in your food, water, and the environment.
Given that you’re intaking toxins on a regular basis, why not consider using a natural supplement that can help with detoxing those toxins on a regular basis?

Why are we getting into Activated Charcoal as a Business?
I am always seeking ways to improve my health and the health of others by looking at the environment or by improving what I put into my body. One of the supplements I’m currently experimenting with is called activated charcoal (specifically the one derived from coconut) – it has detoxifying properties and also has the ability to help improve digestion.
I like the fact that activated charcoal has a proven track record– it has been used for thousands of years to improve health in different ways. I like the fact that it helps to attract and remove the heavy metals found hidden in the things that we consume everyday like our food and water. I like the fact that it helps with digestion which is something that Dorothy has struggled with. And, I like the fact that you can easily add activated charcoal to your existing routines such as skin care and brushing your teeth. As a company that specializes in detoxing the body and improving digestion, choosing to use and recommend activated charcoal was a no brainer for us.
Raising awareness around natural quality products is what we’re all about. As we know this product has been around for a very long time. The problem is, so many people know very little about it.

Various Uses of True Form’s Activated Charcoal
In most cases, people take activated charcoal orally, either in capsule form for its convenience (which our members prefer), or in powdered form (my preference). Our Activated Charcoal is derived from coconut and not wood. I chose coconut because coconut is something we would ingest anyway. I mean who eats wood?
Regardless of what form you find it in, you can use it in different ways:
- Ingest to help remove toxins like heavy metals.
- Ingest to improve gut health.
- Topically by applying a face mask for cosmetic purposes which include skin health (more on this below).
- Cut or pull apart the capsule and apply it to your toothbrush to help with teeth whitening and gum health.
The benefits of activated charcoal don’t just stop at detoxing and digestion though. It can help with skin care as well. Many cosmetic companies have realized the benefits of activated charcoal and are adding it to their skin care products.
In fact if you’d like to help detox your skin, here are a few recipes that can help!
My favourite face mask recipe is the activated charcoal, matcha green tea for antioxidant properties and bentonite clay. Super easy to put together, washes off easily afterwards and my skin has never felt softer!
When to take Activated Charcoal?
The best time to take activated charcoal is on an empty stomach, so this is how I put it into my routine. I set two capsules next to my bed in the evening with a glass of water. As soon as I wake up in the morning, I take my charcoal. Then I review my plan for the day while I have some tea, and then I do my workout. This is followed by my magnesium and shortly after that my breakfast. (If you like to hit the snooze button then I suggest you take the activated charcoal before you rollover and go back to sleep.)
As you fit True Form’s Activated Charcoal into your routine, remember the stipulations here. It’s best to take activated charcoal at least 2-3 hours away from medication. We’re not doctors, so if you are taking any medication at all, we always recommend you talk to your doctor and get their approval before starting something new, so you know exactly what you’re getting yourself into.
I’d also suggest taking activated charcoal if you’re going out for a drink, having deep fried foods, or if you know you’re going to have a meal that’s less than healthy and will be difficult to digest or hard on your digestive system.
No judgement here, we’ve all been there and most of us will be there again. So, make sure you take your activated charcoal before the meal to help your body out. And if you’re feeling extra generous, feel free to pass your bottle around the table to help your friends out as well!

Dr. Axe on the Benefits of Activated Charcoal
Even though Dr. Axe suggests not taking activated charcoal everyday. I still think it’s a good idea to take it everyday, which is a choice I make for ourselves.
I also found this research from Dr. Michael Lynch, who offers the perspective of minimal risk to any reason why you wouldn’t take it regularly.
“But, is it okay to take an activated charcoal supplement daily? Well, technically, yes. “There would be minimal risk,” Dr. Michael Lynch, medical director for Pittsburgh Poison Center and assistant professor in the department of emergency medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, tells TODAY.“
