There I was sitting at my desk in the late afternoon after a very busy day. The bell had rang just minutes before and my students were gone for the day. Exhausted and VERY hungry I was rummaging through my backpack like a mad woman trying to find a fix for my very large sugar craving. NOTHING! At this point I thought to myself, I have got to be more prepared.

I went home that evening and searched for a healthy, quick and easy snack recipe that I could bring to work the next day. That is when hummus entered my life. This recipe is creamy, smooth and packed full of flavour. It’s filling, satisfying and you can pair it with veggies, crackers or pita wedges. What I love most is that it only takes minutes to prepare. Seriously, I could eat hummus everyday!!

Why make your own?

I strongly recommend making your own hummus. That way you know exactly what ingredients are in it. Most of the time store bought hummus contains GMOs, preservatives and other toxins that can be harmful to our health. It is possible to find clean hummus but it can be difficult and is more expensive.

Making your own hummus is cheap, quick and very easy to do. Plus, it tastes so much better!!!


1 can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup lemon juice (about 1-2 lemons)
2 Tbsp tahini
2 cloves of garlic, minced
1/2 tsp. cumin
1/4 tsp. Himalayan salt
1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper                                                                                                                                                         1 tsp. parsley, freshly chopped


Place all ingredients, except parsley, in a blender or food processor in the order listed above. Blend until smooth. Place in a serving bowl and garnish with parsley. Serve with vegetables, crackers or pita wedges. Refrigerate leftovers.
