I think the mind control the body, actually I think the mind controls a lot of things.  Concerning the topic of injury, I believe when we’re not balanced and your mind falters our bodies are affected.  It’s a weakness of the mind that communicates to our bodies that tell us something is wrong.  It doesn’t have to be a weakness, it could be worry or concern that gives us stress.  It could be a problem at work or something in that family that isn’t quite right.  This doesn’t only occur in sports, it could be in the gym or gardening or walking around in everyday life.

I’ve been playing exceptionally well and I started to lose focus.  A couple subpar games, health not being 100% and a lack of confidence were all very apparent when I dove for a ball in the outfield and threw my back out after landing funny.  Most back problems come from a weak core.  But in this case and in others I believe it was a weakness of the mind.

Your back and spine is everything, where would we be without it; a jelly fish.  Later that night I couldn’t sit or lay in any position without discomfort.  I finally fell asleep and when I woke up it was all the worse.  I literally rolled myself on the floor and went through a series of stretches before I felt like I could get up.  I had to laugh, how could I let myself get in this position?  When things are going well sometimes we think we’re invincible.  It’s times like this that make me grateful for being healthy and in good shape the majority of the time.

It’s important that we all find a way to balance ourselves and get back to that state where we are comfortable.  I did another long series of stretching, did the things that I feel balance me and got my mind right.  We have to listen to our bodies.  If we pay attention they tell us what we want to know.  I took the day off which I rarely do, regrouped and am getting back to normal.

This could be thought of as a form of failure.  I think we learn much more from failure than we do from victory.  I learned that I was able to play through an uncomfortable state, regroup and rebalance myself.  If this didn’t happen I wouldn’t have known how important what I was doing is.  Sometimes we take little things for granted especially our health.

A question I’ve often heard asked, “Would you rather have health or money?”  I know what my answer would be every time.
