Ever feel like a book comes into your life at the right time?  Ever look?

This book reminds me of a poem.

Jonathan Livingston Seagull By Richard Bach

I ran into this book through my travels, I had no idea about it or never heard about it before.  So I pulled up some information on this book because I wanted to share it with you and found all kinds of information.  It’s been researched, summarized and anayized.  There a quizzes and study notes for it, which only leads me to believe it’s studied in classrooms.

It’s a short book an easy read and is about Jonathan who is a Seagull.  He teaches us how to follow our dreams and reach our goals, no matter what anyone else might think. Jonathan is a seagull who wants to master the art of flying, even though his flock has told him many times that all seagulls should concentrate on is getting food.

Jonathon wants to explore and expand, he wants to be different and experience new things.  He copies other birds on how to eat and fly which frowned upon by is flock.  But when Jonathon questions their logic the only answer he gets is ‘because that is what seagulls do’.

Do you ever ask why someone does something and they say because that’s the way we’ve always done it.  It could make absolutely no sense and be the least efficient way to accomplish something, but that’s the way it’s done, no questions asked.

Personally I hear this answer frequently because I’m always trying to think of new ways on how to accomplish something.

That was an important part of the book for me, a part that I could relate to, because Jonathon always thought outside the box and was able to accomplish extraordinary things by not conforming and following his dreams.

Reminds me of this poem…..

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Robert Frost
