What’s unconditional love?  (We’re going to call it ‘UCL’ for this post….yes I know they are only 2 words)  Really, is there such a thing?

Marriage vows talk about UCL,  it says somewhere in there, ‘till death do us …’.  Could that be any less true?  The divorce rate is over 50%, but we have people around the age of 25-30 that think they can’t have a happy life unless they have that UCL of marriage and a house and children.  Seems like we can’t be happy without it.  Seems like, as soon as we have those 3 things BAM, all our troubles are over.  But then look at the statistics, look at your own close friends or family that are ‘happily married’ or wait, probably more so ‘happily divorced’.

I don’t know where it comes from.  I’m around the age where people ask the question, do you have someone?  I can’t help but laugh.  What does that mean, do I have someone?  Does someone love me?  Do I have someone to laugh with?  So what, if I do my life is complete, and if I don’t ‘oh how sad’???

We have friends who turn their back on us when we make a mistake, and we turn our backs on them when they do the same, how’s that for being a ‘friend’, how’s that for UCL?

We have brothers and sisters who we no longer talk to anymore, other family members and parents we no longer have in our lives maybe for one thing or the other.  Maybe that UCL is still there in some place.  I’m not saying there has to be, I’m saying it’s used much too much.  We think we know but do we really? I love so and so, I want to be with this person the rest of my life, this is my best friend, BFF (text talk for ‘best friends forever).

If we really want to learn something we don’t have to look any further than a puppy or a child.  The purest sense of LIFE.

It doesn’t matter how mean you are to a puppy, if it knows you as its ‘owner’ it will always love you.  It doesn’t matter how many times you beat it, push it out in the cold, scold it ect, it will always be there for you.

No different than a child.  Any kind of physical, emotional or verbal abuse, that child can’t help but love their parent.  Whatever happens, however mad, mean or angry a parent gets at their own child, that child knows UCL.  That puppy knows UCL.

Maybe next time we think we know what UCL is, we should rethink UCL.
