I went to the practice field yesterday to get some extra work in. Our field is at a sports complex surrounded by other fields and courts and sports.
On my way to the field there was a large number of kids hanging around. They seemed a little timid and not sure what to think of me. One brave little guy comes up to me and says ‘Are you a baseballer’! I thought this name was funny, never being referred to one before. I told him I was. Before I knew it I was surrounded by a bunch of kids asking me all kinds of questions.
They wanted to know where I was from, if I was a professional, if I was rich, how many homeruns I hit. They all got a chance to swing my bat and have a few questions answered. Then suddenly whoever was supervising them hurried them onto an awaiting bus. They were gone as quickly as they came. I didn’t even get a chance to ask them what they played.
I’ve been around many kids before, signed autographs and answered questions. It’s always a new experience when something like this happens. I am as grateful to have been a part of it a those kids were. I won’t soon forget what it was like to look up to pro athletes and want to be just like them.
