The Truth About Commitment: Why Belief and Effort Are Key to Success

And then there’s the buy in. But with anything right? If you purchase anything really and don’t believe it’s going to work for you, there’s a small chance it will. You’ll look for or find something wrong with it.

You’ll find a reason to complain, you’ll find a reason to return, you’ll find a reason why ‘it doesn’t work great for you’.

This hasn’t happened in awhile but I was thinking about it the other day. Sometimes people try something because everyone else is trying it but they don’t really want to, or they don’t really believe in it.

A harder pill to swallow is, some people just want to say they’re doing something. When I used to work in a gym I’d actually have clients put in the min effort possible. I knew it and they knew it.

They hired me as a personal trainer, so I’d see them 1-2 times a week, the odd time 3. And some of them did nothing when I didn’t see them. They’d work hard with me, and push them as best I could.

We’d talk about their plan and what they were doing during the week when it wasn’t our session day and they didn’t do cardio, or stretching or any other activity. Even though I’d explain to them they need more exercise than 1-2 times a week, that didn’t change much.

We’d talk about nutrition and I’d give them ideas, and recipes, I’d check their food journal if they filled it out which was rare. And no eating habits were changed.

The odd time I’d call someone out (in my early days I wasn’t as brave as I am now ;)). I’d say, why are you here if you aren’t willing to put in any extra effort. They’d shrug their shoulders and say something like, ‘it’s better than nothing’.

Which was of course terribly frustrating to me because I felt like I wanted them to see results more than they did. I felt like a failure because they weren’t seeing results.

So here’s the thing, and one of the reasons why I REALLY dislike ’21 day fixes’ and short term programs. If you want to see results there has to be a buy in, you have to at least partially believe this is going to work for you. The more you believe, the more it WILL work, because the more you believe the more effort you put in. The more effort you put in, the more results you’re going to see.

If you sign up for short term and you know you aren’t going to commit to anything long term, you already have the mindset of one foot in – one foot out. You already know before you start, as soon as things get hard you’re going to jump ship or put in less effort because you’ve failed in the past.

If you could imagine, some people even have ‘the next thing they’re going to try planned’ before they start a certain program. What does that mean? They already don’t believe this is the solution they need, they’ll try it so they can say they’re doing something, which is ‘better than nothing’. But never really putting in their full effort to see the full results.

So here’s my message to you that could be life changing if you allow it. Whatever it is you’re doing, Fully Commit. More than you ever have. Believe it’ll work, put in the effort to make it happen. Show up day in and day out. Don’t look for the next shiny object as soon as the road gets rough. Dig your heels in and put in MORE effort, and that’s where you’ll see the results you’re looking for.
