I don’t often know where I’m going with my writings when I sit down to write a blog, the same as sometimes when I walk out of a condo, apartment or hotel when I’m in a different city, country or continent. Invariably, if I walk long enough I get lost. I figure if I don’t, I haven’t walked far or long enough. I offer that short explanation because this blog was going to be about time, then money, success and we’ll see what else comes up.
This particular writing is inspired by a walk in a business area. Even walking around the hotel in this area where there is a conference filled with business people, I can’t think of a more uncomfortable place. I leave the hotel right when 5 o’clock hits and I find ‘business’ people or ‘suits’ flying by either side of me on the side walk, like the recess bell just rang and no one wants to be late and risk detention. I don’t know a thing about the corporate world. I don’t know what it’s like to get up and put on a suit, nor do I know what it’s like to sit behind a desk from 9-5. I don’t know what it’s like to make sacrifices at home because of ‘work’ but I don’t know what it’s like to get one of those (I’m guessing) rather large pay checks either.
As I stroll down the street (and I do stroll, you’d know if you’ve ever walked with me) in a pair of sweat pants, t-shirt and track jacket, surrounded by rushing people in (from what I can tell) expensive suits and brief cases, a part of me wonders what that’s like.
We often want what we can’t have, and that part of me wonders what it’s like to rush around like the fire alarm just went off, what it’s like to put on one of those suits and sit behind a desk all day. I figure there’s got to be something to, so many people do it. The other part of me shakes some sense in to me and reminds me you’ll never catch me behind a desk for 8 hrs. That would be the same as a caged bird.
These people look successful to me. They look like they have money, have a job, sit in a big office building all day and make important decision. Clearly there’s a chance I could be very wrong. Which makes me wonder as I walk; I must stick out like a sore thumb chewing on an apple in sweat pants. Once in a while I catch a strangers eye and I wonder if they see success in me, I wonder if they wish they could walk around like they had nowhere to go, wear comfortable pants and I wonder if maybe they just question how this guy got so lost.
